What is MCS certification?

MCS — the Microgeneration Certification Scheme— is the UK government's independent quality mark for small-scale low-carbon energy technology. Established in 2007 and governed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, it certifies both the products and the installers of renewable energy systems.

To become MCS certified, an installer must pass technical competency assessments, hold relevant trade qualifications, demonstrate adequate insurance, and undergo a site audit by an independent certification body. They must re-certify annually to maintain their status.

The scheme covers air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, solar PV, solar thermal, small-scale wind, and biomass — making it the most relevant certification for modern underfloor heating installations paired with low-carbon heating.

What MCS certification means for you

Access to government grants

Only MCS-certified installers can apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant on your behalf — worth up to £7,500 for a qualifying heat pump.

Independently verified quality

Your installer has been assessed by an accredited certification body, not just self-declared. Their work must meet nationally recognised performance standards.

5-year workmanship warranty

All MCS installations come with a minimum 5-year workmanship warranty backed by the MCS scheme — protection you cannot get from an uncertified installer.

Correct system sizing

MCS requires installers to carry out heat loss calculations and design the system to MIS (Microgeneration Installation Standard) — critical for efficiency.

Why MCS matters for underfloor heating

Underfloor heating and heat pumps are a natural pair — and MCS certification is the link that unlocks financial support and guarantees quality.

Heat pumps + UFH = the perfect match

Heat pumps produce water at 35–50°C — lower than a gas boiler. UFH's large surface area works efficiently at these temperatures, unlike radiators. Together they achieve the highest efficiencies (COP 3.5+), meaning £1 of electricity produces £3.50+ of heat.

The BUS grant requires MCS

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides £7,500 for air source heat pumps and £7,500 for ground source heat pumps. Your installer must hold MCS certification and apply for the voucher before installation begins. Without MCS, the grant is unavailable.

System design matters

MCS-certified installers must calculate the heat loss for each room, design the UFH layout, and commission the system to MIS 3005 standards. This prevents the most common UFH problem — an undersized system that never gets the floor warm enough.

How to verify an MCS installer

Always confirm MCS status yourself — certificates can expire or be suspended.

  1. 1

    Visit the MCS register

Go to mcscertified.com/find-an-installer — the official, live database of all certified installers.

  2. 2

Search by company name or postcode

Enter the installer's company name or postcode and select "Heat Pump" as the technology type to check their certification covers the work you need.

  3. 3

    Check the certificate is current

A valid certificate will show the certification body, technologies covered, and expiry date. Ensure it hasn't expired and covers air source or ground source heat pumps as required.

  4. 4

Ask for the MCS certificate number

Legitimate MCS installers will readily provide their certificate number (format: NAP-XXXXXX). Request this before any work begins and cross-reference it on the register.

Important: The BUS grant voucher must be applied for before the heat pump is installed. Your installer applies on your behalf once survey and design are complete. You cannot claim the grant retrospectively.

Frequently asked questions

What is MCS certification?

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the UK's independent quality mark for small-scale renewable energy installations. It certifies both the products used and the installers who fit them, ensuring every installation meets strict performance and safety standards set by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Do I need an MCS installer for underfloor heating?

MCS certification is not required for underfloor heating pipework alone. However, if you are pairing your UFH system with a heat pump — which is the most efficient and increasingly common combination — you must use an MCS-certified installer to qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) government grant.

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government grant administered by Ofgem. It provides up to £7,500 towards the cost of a qualifying air source heat pump or ground source heat pump. To receive the grant, the installation must be carried out by an MCS-certified installer.

How do I check if an installer is MCS certified?

You can verify any installer's current MCS status on the official MCS register at mcscertified.com. Simply search by company name, postcode, or technology type. A valid MCS certificate will show the company name, certificate number (e.g. NAP-XXXXXX), the technologies they are certified for, and the expiry date.

Why is MCS important for heat pump + UFH systems?

Heat pumps produce water at lower temperatures (35–50°C) than traditional boilers. Underfloor heating is ideal because its large surface area works efficiently at these lower temperatures. An MCS-certified installer has been trained to correctly size and design both the heat pump and the UFH system together, maximising efficiency and ensuring the installation qualifies for available grants.

What technologies does MCS certification cover?

MCS covers air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, solar photovoltaic (PV), solar thermal, small-scale wind, biomass boilers, and battery storage. For UFH pairings, the most relevant certifications are air source heat pumps (ASHP) and ground source heat pumps (GSHP).
