MCS — the Microgeneration Certification Scheme— is the UK government's independent quality mark for small-scale low-carbon energy technology. Established in 2007 and governed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, it certifies both the products and the installers of renewable energy systems.
To become MCS certified, an installer must pass technical competency assessments, hold relevant trade qualifications, demonstrate adequate insurance, and undergo a site audit by an independent certification body. They must re-certify annually to maintain their status.
The scheme covers air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, solar PV, solar thermal, small-scale wind, and biomass — making it the most relevant certification for modern underfloor heating installations paired with low-carbon heating.
