What Is Milled (In-Cut) Underfloor Heating?

Most underfloor heating retrofits either pour a new screed layer over the pipe or fit low-profile overlay boards on top of the existing floor — both raise the finished floor level, adding several of the layers shown on the right. Milled underfloor heating takes a different approach: a specialist milling machine cuts channels directly into your existing concrete slab or screed, the pipe is laid into those channels, and the surface is reinstated with a thin latex compound. The floor stays at the same height it was before.

It's primarily a retrofit technique — suited to renovations and extensions on existing concrete or screeded floors, especially where raising the floor level isn't practical because of doorways, staircases, low ceilings or a listed building.

Why Choose a Milled Retrofit

No new screed, no raised floor levels

Channels are milled directly into your existing screed or concrete slab, so the pipe sits in the floor you already have — doors, skirting and staircases stay untouched.

Dust-extracted, low-mess installation

Specialist milling machines run with industrial dust extraction, so the process is far less disruptive than a full screed-up retrofit.

No doors or skirting to trim

Because the floor level doesn’t change, there’s none of the door-planing, skirting and threshold work a raised-floor retrofit usually needs.

Faster than an overlay-board retrofit

Milling, laying pipe and reinstating the surface is typically quicker room-by-room than fitting overlay boards or pouring a new screed.

How Floor Milling for Underfloor Heating Works

Four-step milled underfloor heating installation process: milling channels, laying pipe, and the reinstated floor ready for its final finish
1

Mark out pipe routes

The installer maps the heating loop across the room, working around fixed fittings and the existing floor build-up.

2

Mill channels into the floor

A specialist milling machine cuts precise channels into the existing screed or concrete along the marked routes.

3

Lay and pressure test the pipe

Pipe (typically 16mm multilayer PERT with an oxygen barrier) is laid into the channels, then the loop is pressure tested before it’s covered.

4

Reinstate the floor

A cementitious latex compound is applied over the pipe to protect it and level the surface, ready for your chosen floor finish.
